The golfing great Gary Player regards holder Phil Mickelson as the favourite for this week's U.S. Masters but also expects Ireland's Rory McIlroy to be among the conteders in the season's opening major.

Mickelson, goes into this year's tournament which starts at Augusta on Friday at shortened odds, after yesterday winning the Houston Open by three strokes.

McIlroy's yet to win a major title but the world number nine is rated one of the of the most exciting players in the game with the ability to shoot very low scores.

The 21-year-old burst onto the scene last year with his first PGA Tour victory at the Quail Hollow Championship, where he won by four strokes shooting a course record 10-under-par 62 in the process.

Player's less certain about Tiger Woods's prospects.

Woods who's won the Masters four times, has slumped to seventh on the world rankings and Player says he's noticed several flaws in his swing.
