New Zealand Cricket says it's open to a dual captaincy role for the Black Caps, with the process to find a successor to Dan Vettori officially underway.

Vettori announced his retirement from the captaincy role during the recent World Cup but intends to continue playing test cricket.

Ross Taylor and Brendan McCullum who've both filled in for Vettori when he's missed matches are the leading contenders for the role

The chief executive of the New Zealand Cricket Justin Vaughan says a the national selectors, coach John Wright and a soon to be appointed high performance director will being involved in the appointment which will then have to be approved by the NZC board.

However he says there's no requirement the appointee lead both the test and one day side's.

Vaughan says they hope to have announced the new captain by the of next month at the latest.
