Brisbane have signed head coach Anthony Griffin for another two National Rugby Legue seasons after being rejected by former coach Wayne Bennett.
It had widely been speculated that Bennett would return to the club he guided to six NRL titles in 21 seasons in charge after he announced recently he was leaving defending NRL champions St George Illawarra at the end of this season.
But Broncos chief executive Paul White says negotiations with Bennett ended when Bennett said Brisbane was no longer an option.
The news means Newcastle and South Sydney remain the leading contenders to secure Bennett's services.
Griffin has the Broncos on the top of the NRL ladder after four rounds.
