The New Zealand surfer Billy Stairmand has beaten 10-time world champion Kelly Slater in a major upset at an ASP Tour event near Perth.

Stairmand's win was achieved in powerful three to four metre waves at the Margaret River break, south of Perth, with Stairmand advancing to the final twelve of the second tier Prime tour event.

Slater was competing in the event as part of his lead into the top tier Rip Curl Pro event at Bells Beach in Victoria later this months.
