Gold Coast have hailed the signing of Jamal Idris as one of the most important in the NRL rugby league club's short history, with the Bulldogs centre agreeing to a five-year deal with the Titans starting in 2012.

The Titans beat out bids from the Bulldogs and Newcastle to snare the 20-year-old NSW Origin representative on a deal believed to be worth AU$1.8 million (NZ$2.4 million), with Idris widely viewed as the hottest property coming off contract at the end of this season.

The Titans managing director Michael Searle says Idris' talents both on and off the field made him the perfect fit for the club.

Idris, who made his debut with the Bulldogs in 2008 and came off the bench for NSW in the opening game of last year's State of Origin series, cited the lifestyle change involved with a move to the tourist strip as one of the key reasons behind his decision.
