A penalty apiece has seen Real Madrid and fellow Spanish football giants Barcelona draw 1-1 at the Bernabeu stadium in Madrid.

Lionel Messi converted from the spot after half-time, when Barcelona striker David Villa was brought down by Raul Albiol in the box, earning a red card.

But 10-man Real struck back through a Cristiano Ronaldo penalty, after his left back Marcelo was fouled by Dani Alves.

Barca still lead La Liga by eight points.

It's the first of four "Clasicos" over the next three weeks, the two sides squaring up again in the King's Cup final midweek as well as a two-legged European Champions League semi-final.

Tempers flared throughout the game as well as in the build-up, when journalists walked out on a news conference with Jose Mourinho after the Real football coach refused to speak.

The often outspoken coach sat with a poker face and furrowed brows next to his assistant Aitor Karanka, who took all the questions during the Friday conference broadcast on live television and radio and lasting roughly 11 minutes.
