New Zealand Cricket has confirmed that its new Director of Cricket is the former coach of Australia, John Buchanan.

It's a new role and Buchanan will report to the chief executive Justin Vaughan with the position based at the New Zealand Cricket headquarters in Christchurch.

Buchanan, who's 58, ended his eight years with the Australian team with the best record of any coach in International cricket history.

He says it's an honour to be appointed to a challenging role.

Buchanan coached Australia from 1999-2007, when they won two one-day World Cups and had a world record of 16 successive Test victories.

He also acted as a consultant for England before their recent Ashes series in Australia, which the tourists won 3-1.
