Silver Ferns World Champs squad to be named today

5:38 am on 19 April 2011

The Silver Ferns squad for the World Champs in Singapore in June will be named today with most interest centred on the inclusion of the currently unavailable shooter Cathrine Latu.

The Northern Mystics goal shoot is set to be named in the squad subject to a Court of Arbitration for Sport hearing, which is yet to be scheduled.

Under current international netball rules Latu's ineligible for the Silver Ferns having previously played for Samoa and must serve a four year stand down, which won't expire until after the world champs.

However Netball New Zealand says the sport's international governing body IFNA created a precedent in allowing former Silver Ferns defender Vilimaina Davu to play for Fiji at the 2007 world champs, just a year after playing for New Zealand.

Netball New Zealand is now awaiting a hearing date but is confident the matter can be resolved before the June tournament.

The Silver Ferns will play two tests against the reigning world champions Australia in the lead up to the world champs, with Australia having already lost to key players to injury in captain Sharelle McMahon and midcourter Lauren Nourse.
