Teen golfer Ko makes history by taking NZ strokeplay event

6:10 am on 24 April 2011

Teenage golfer Lydia Ko has made history by becoming the first woman to win the New Zealand strokeplay and Australian Strokeplay titles in the same year after a nine shot win in Christchurch.

The world number three amateur took a five shot lead into the final round and was never in danger of losing the tournament to her closest rival Ceilia Cho at the Russley Golf Club.

Ko finished the 18th with an eagle and carded a two under par 72 in the final round.

The win makes Ko - who turns 14 tomorrow, the youngest winner of the New Zealand Strokeplay event.
