Deadline looms for Olympics ticket applications

9:06 am on 27 April 2011

The organising committee for next year's London Olympics say there's been a late surge of applications for tickets ahead of today's deadline, with strong demand for less glamorous sports like archery as well as big name Olympic events.

British residents have had a six week window to apply for six and a half million tickets.

The chief executive of the organising committee Paul Deighton says demand has been high for the ceremonies, athletics, swimming, rowing and track cycling.

But he says there's also been plenty of applications for canoe slalom, rhythmic gymnastics, badminton and archery which will be held at the Lord's cricket ground.

Applications for over-subscribed events will go into a ballot.

However with no guidelines available as to how many tickets are available in each of the five price bands applying is something of a balancing act and has drawn criticism.
