Cycling, gymnastics, and equestrian events have proved to be the most popular among Britons hoping to secure tickets to next year's Olympics.

Organisers say sports fans requested more than 20 million tickets for the 2012 London Olympics, after a six-week sales window closed yesterday.

Around 1.8 million people submitted requests for tickets and more than half of the 650 sessions are oversubscribed and will be allocated by ballot.

Track cycling, in which British riders are expected to win medals, will need a ballot to decide who gets tickets, as well as rhythmic gymnastics, the triathlon, modern pentathlon and the cross-country equestrian events.

Demand for both the opening and closing ceremonies were 10 times oversubscribed.

Successful applicants will be notified in June 2011.
