USA on board, Germany shock Russia in worlds opener

The young United States squad have begun their ice hockey world championship campaign with a 5-1 victory over Austria in the Slovak capital Bratislava, while Finland enjoyed a revenge win against Denmark with the same score.

Germany stunned title contenders Russia 2-0 in the opening match of the world championship while Canada outshone Belarus and hosts Slovakia laboured to victory against Slovenia.

Thomas Greilinger got the Germans going before Patrick Reimer netted with a backhand in the third period to seal Germany's first ever win over 'Zborna' in the worlds.
