Blues grind down ill-disciplined Highlanders

The Blues have stormed to the top of the Super Rugby standings with a 15-10 win over the Highlanders in Dunedin.

The All Black-studded Blues ground out the win at Carisbrook without scoring a try, relying on the boot of first five Luke McAlister who kicked five penalty goals.

The win extends the Blues' undefeated run to eight matches.

Captain Mealamu dedicated the win to lock Kurtis Haiu, who's taking an indefinite break from rugby for cancer treatment.

The Highlanders dominated possession but let themselves down repeatedly with discipline lapses that resulted in lock Jarrad Hoeata and halfback Aaron Smith being sin-binned in the second half.

Their third loss leaves them fourth, seven points above the New South Wales Waratahs.

The Blues' stay at the top may be short-lived, however, as the Queensland Reds can claim back the lead with a win over the Hurricanes in Wellington on Saturday.
