The New Zealand men's hockey team has lost its opening match of the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in Malaysia, defeated 4-2 by Pakistan in Ipoh.

The young and inexperienced Black Sticks did well to recover from a 3-0 deficit early in the second half, but still joined hosts Malaysia and India in posting opening losses.

Great Britain beat Malaysia 3-1 and Korea beat India 3-2.

New Zealand play Korea early on Sunday morning.
