Warne to retire from IPL

11:50 am on 7 May 2011

Shane Warne will quit professional cricket following the current Indian Premier League season after tormenting batsmen all over the world for two decades with his leg-spin, an art the Australian helped revive.

The spin great retired from Test cricket after Australia whitewashed England 5-0 in the Ashes in early 2007 but continued to play in the cash-rich IPL.

Warne, who took 708 Test wickets, has been Rajasthan Royals' captain/coach in the four editions of the Twenty20 tournament.

The flamboyant leg-spinner, who led Rajasthan to victory in the inaugural IPL, did not rule out a role as a mentor or coach next season.
