Citroen's seven-time world champion Sebastien Loeb has won the Rally of Italy in Sardinia for his 63rd career win and fourth in the race to reinforce his lead in the championship.

Finland's Mikko Hirvonen in a Ford finished 11 seconds behind with Norwegian Petter Solberg in third in his privateer Citroen.

Loeb's compatriot and Citroen teammate Sebastien Ogier, who had been bidding for a third successive win of the season, challenged strongly for the podium but he lost his chance when he suffered a broken suspension after hitting a stone on the 17th special stage.

The young Frenchman finished fourth overall.

Loeb now has 100 points, Hirvonen 93, Ogier 81, Latvala 68 and Solberg 46.
