Firebirds thump Magic

The Queensland Firebirds are on the verge of becoming the first team to take out the trans-Tasman netball championship undefeated after surging into the grand final with a comprehensive 50-39 victory over the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic on the Gold Coast.

The result was never in doubt as the minor premiers grabbed a seven-goal lead in the opening minutes and were on track to hand out the biggest finals hiding in the competition's four-year history before fading at the death.

The Magic, the only team to make the play-offs in all four years of the ANZ Championship, were reduced to an attacking rubble with Laura Geitz dominating Irene van Dyk who managed just 17 goals from 19 attempts.

The Magic will now meet the Northern Mystics on Sunday for the right to make the grand final.

The Magic coach Noeline Taurua admitted they were smashed in all facets of the game and had their confidence torn to bits.

Taurua says Queensland been the most consistent team and watching from the sideline in the first few minutes she was thinking 'shit they're looking hot'.
