Cricket's leading Test wicket taker, spinner Muttiah Muralitharan, will play for Wellington in the domestic Twenty20 competition next season.

Muralitharan, who's 39, retired from Test cricket last year and played his last international game against India in the World Cup one day final last month.

He finished his Test career with 800 wickets in 133 Tests and took 534 wickets in 350 one dayers.

Muralitharan says he's always enjoyed playing cricket in New Zealand and is looking foward to his time in Wellington.

He's currently playing in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 competition.
