The Football Ferns have lost their final match ahead of next month's FIFA Women's World Cup going down 2-1 to trans-Tasman rivals Australia in an entertaining international friendly in Gosford last night.

After losing the first test of the Australian leg of their World Cup warm-up tour the Ferns put in a far more competitive performance that bodes well for their campaign in Germany in June and July.

New Zealand has only 43 days until their World Cup opener against Japan in Bochum and despite the loss coach John Herdman was pleased with the new marker laid down by his side.

The Ferns now travel to China for a training match and one full international against the World number 15 ranked side which doubles as the last chance for players to cement their spots in the World Cup squad to be announced on June the 7th.
