South Korea's K.J Choi beat American David Toms in a thrilling sudden-death playoff to win the Players Championship, golf's unofficial fifth major.

Choi became the first Asian born golfer to win the event by parring the first playoff hole, the par 3 17th, with Toms making a heart-breaking three putt bogey after sending his tee shot close to the pin.

The pair had finished the tournament tied at 13-under par after closing with final rounds of 70.

Choi snatched the outright lead with a birdie on the 17th but Toms drained a long birdie putt on the final hole to force the playoff.
