The Kenyan Olympic Marathon champion Samuel Wanjiru, has died after jumping off the balcony of his home in town, 150km from the capital Nairobi.

Police say they're trying establish whether Wanjiru, the first Kenyan to win the Olympic gold in the marathon at Beijing in 2008 deliberately killed himself.

The regional police chief, Jaspher Ombati, says they're investigating a possible love triangle that could have been behind Wanjiru's death.

Ombati says the athlete's wife had come home to find Wanjiru in bed with another woman, had locked the couple in the bedroom and ran outside.

Wanjiru apparently then leapt from the balcony.

Last year Wanjiru was charged with threatening to kill his wife and illegal possession of an AK-47 assault rifle but his wife dropped the charge saying the couple had reconciled.
