The Australian tennis great Ken Rosewall is recovering in a Rome hospital after reportedly suffering a blocked artery in his neck.

76-year-old Rosewall was in the Italian capital to attend a ceremony where he was due to receive a golden racquet given annually to former tennis greats.

His wife Wilma said doctors told her that he had not suffered any heart or brain damage.

Rosewall will be kept under observation until he is well enough to fly back to Australia.

Rosewall won 132 singles titles, including four Australian Opens, two French Opens and two US Opens during a decorated career.
