Football Ferns lose in China

8:17 am on 21 May 2011

The New Zealand women's football team have rounded off a whirlwind World Cup warm tour of Australia and China with another competitive showing in a 1-nil defeat to China in Jinan.

Backing up from Sunday's 2-1 loss to fellow FIFA World Cup finalists Australia in Gosford, the Football Ferns again created enough pressure and possession to force a result against their hosts but lacked a clinical edge in front of goal.

The game's only goal came from China's Ma Jun four minutes before halftime.

The Football Ferns have never beaten China in 12 attempts but described the match as the closest the team has got to claiming that historic scalp.

New Zealand open their World Cup campaign against Japan on June the 27th in Germany.
