The ultra-consistent English golfer Luke Donald made light of rough weather with a dream start to the European Tour's flagship event, the PGA Championship at Wentworth in Surrey.

The world number two scorched round in 64, 7 under par to take a two shot lead over the Italian teenager Mattea Manassero and the Swede Johan Edfors.

Of those who completed their rounds only 11 broke 70, and the likes of the Northern Irish stars Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy shot 75 and 76 respectively.

Michael Campbell had a respectable 72, Danny Lee was 3-over par after 11 holes, Mark Brown finished on 74, and Danny Lee is three over par after 11 holes.
