11:57 am on 28 May 2011

The world tennis number three Roger Federer cruised past Serbia's Janko Tipsarevic 6-1 6-4 6-3 to reach the French Open last 16 as his low-key Roland Garros campaign continued.

The third seed and 2009 champion will face close friend and Swiss compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka in the fourth round after Wawrinka beat seventh-seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Federer playing in his 46th consecutive grand slam, had been pushed by Tipsarevic in a five-set marathon in the third round of the Australian Open in 2008, but there was no such drama in Paris.

In other men's third-round matches the Spanish seventh seed David Ferrer crushed Ukraine Sergiy Stakhovsky, the French 13th seed Richard Gasquet beat 23rd seed Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci, French ninth seed Gael Monfils beat Belgian qualifier Steve Darcis 6-3 6-4 7-5 and unseeded Spaniard Albert Montanes upset Russian 12th seed Mikhail Youzhny.

All winners advance to the fourth round.
