Englishman Luke Donald is golf's new world number one after his victory in a playoff at the European Tour's flagship event the PGA championship at Wentworth in England.

Donald started the event ranked second behind his Ryder Cup teammate and fellow Englishman Lee Westwood, and the pair were tied on 6-under par at the end of the final round.

They re-played the par-5 18th hole, and Donald made no race of the playoff with a birdie four, while Westwood made a complete mess of it to finish with a seven.

Another Englishman Simon Dyson finished third, two shots back.
