Montgomerie winds back clock

Colin Montgomerie proved he can still mix it with the best, firing a three-under 68 in the European PGA Championship final round to register his first top-10 finish for three years.

The 47-year-old Briton, who has a proud record at Wentworth, rolled back the years with a vintage performance on the fiendishly difficult West Course to end the tournament on one-under-par 283.

Montgomerie is without a victory since the 2007 European Open and has plunged to 462nd in the world rankings but he says his performance at the PGA Championship gave him fresh heart ahead of U.S. Open qualifying at nearby Walton Heath on Tuesday.

The eight-times European number one Montgomerie went through a rare experience last week when he was sacked by his regular caddie, Jason Hempleman.
