The British motor racing driver Dan Wheldon may have won the centennial edition of the Indianapolis 500 but the race will be forever remembered for American rookie J.R. Hildebrand's last lap blunder at the Brickyard.

Hildebrand hit the wall coming out of the final turn, skidding on shredded tyre remains on the track, allowing Wheldon to speed past for his second Indy 500 win.

Hildebrand scrapped across the line to finish second.

Graham Rahal, son of 1986 Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal, was third.

New Zealand's Scott Dixon, who started from second and led a field-high 73 laps, faded in the final laps to finish sixth.
