New Zealanders shortlisted for sevens top honours

8:49 am on 30 May 2011

Two New Zealanders head the race to be crowned the world's best sevens player after Tomasi Cama and Tim Mikkelson were named alongside South Africa's Cecil Afrika in the IRB's player of the year shortlist.

At the end of the World Series, which was won by New Zealand with an event to spare, the outstanding trio were voted by the management teams of the 12 core sides who competed in all eight events on the IRB circuit.

Cama's tactical acumen and outstanding form as a playmaker was a major factor behind New Zealand's ninth World Series success, and he also finished as the season's second highest point-scorer on 299.

Mikkelson's versatility and consistency in both the forwards and the backs was another key ingredient for coach Gordon Tietjens throughout the course of the season.

The winner will be announced at the IRB Awards in Auckland on October the 24th.

The final leg of the series in Scotland was won by South Africa after New Zealand were knocked out in the semi's by losing finalists Australia.
