The Highlanders' will mark their last home game at Carisbrook on Friday night by playing in a new 2012 strip in their Super rugby match against the Australian side the Western Force.
Highlanders general manager Roger Clark says the new colours will only be unveiled then, although the new strip is reportedly light green.
Clark says the time is right for change with a new coach, players and new stadium from next year.
He says the colours represent the physical characteristics of the whole franchise region and will make a clear statement about the geography of the region and stand out in the competition.
