The New Zealand men's football team has been outclassed 3-nil by Mexico in their international friendly in Denver but coach Ricki Herbert says his team were saved an even bigger hiding by a strong half performance from the All Whites substitutes.

Mexico dominated possession scoring three all to easy first half goals but the All Whites regrouped and managed to hold out El Tricolor in the second spell.

Herbert's side will be looking for a massive improvement against Australia in Adelaide on Sunday but he took some positives from the All Whites second half showing.
