South Africa's test captain Graeme Smith says the priority now is to challenge India for the number one spot in the cricket world rankings after former India coach Gary Kirsten was confirmed as the new head coach of the South African side.

The former Proteas opening batsman Kirsten, who led India to World Cup victory earlier in the year, will formally take over in August ahead of the two home series against Australia and Sri Lanka.

Former Proteas paceman Alan Donald was confirmed as one of Kirsten's assistants after ditching his role as bowling coach for the New Zealand cricket team, whom he worked with during this year's world cup.

Smith says it's now time for South Africa to challenge India for the title of world's best.
