New Zealand triathletes Nicky Samuels and Bevan Docherty have finished first and second in the women's and men's races in San Francisco's Escape from Alcatraz.
Samuels beat the three-time champion Leanda Cave by 4 minutes 21 seconds
while Docherty was 34 seconds behind the American winner Andy Potts.
Competitors swam from the notorious former Federal prison in San Francisco Bay to the beach at Marina Green before the bike and run legs through Golden Gate Park.
Docherty, the 2004 ITU World Champion, 2004 Olympic silver medalist and 2008 Olympic bronze medalist, is living and training in Santa Cruz.
