NBC holds onto US Olympic rights

NBC outbid Fox and ABC-ESPN to retain Olympic television broadcasting rights in the United States through until 2020 in a deal reported to be worth 5.3 billion dollars.

NBC, which already holds US rights for next year's London Olympics, won the rights for the 2014 Sochi Winter Games, the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, in addition to the unawarded 2018 and 2020 Games.

After the departure of former NBC Sports chairman Dick Ebersol last month, Comcast-owned NBC was thought to be in trouble in the bidding against News Corporation's Fox and Disney's ABC-ESPN.

NBC had a long-term relationship with the IOC, telecasting every Summer Olympics to American viewers since 1988 in Seoul and every Winter Olympics since 2002 in Salt Lake City.

NBC lost 271 million dollars on last year's Vancouver Winter Olympics coverage and was expected to lose money on coverage next year from London.
