The defending champion New Zealand under-20 rugby team crushed hosts Italy 64-7 in their first match at the IRB Junior World Championships in Treviso, scoring nine tries to one on Saturday morning with fullback Charles Piutau bagging a double.

First five Gareth Anscombe was exceptional with the boot, nailing nine out of ten kick attempts as the New Zealanders outgunned a spirited Italian side who caused the men in black more than a few problems.

Captain and lock Luke Whitelock was more than happy with New Zealand's winning start to their campaign, but the Cantabrian says they still have plenty to improve on ahead of their next match against Wales on Wednesday.

The Baby Blacks top Pool A from Wales, the 34-8 winners over Argentina in Padova, while South Africa head Pool B from England after beating Scotland 33-0 at the same venue. England survived a scare from a spirited Ireland side, winning 33-25 with a late try seeing the English home.
