The New Zealand moto-cross rider Ben Townley has quit European MX GP series as he struggles to regain his self confidence after a series of off season crashes.

Having pulled out of the latest round in Portugal the Kawasaki rider says he's returning home to work on his physical and mental fitness so he can ultimately return to racing.

Townley had two serious accidents while training during the off season the most serious of which was a broken jaw, the first time he's suffered a head injury in 20 years of racing.

He says that's knocked his self confidence and feels he can't race safely at the top level.

He says he needs more time to rebuild up his confidence but is unsure how long that might take or when he'll return to racing.
