Ralph says Reds callup came out of the blue

The former All Black Caleb Ralph has his former Crusaders coach Robbie Deans for his Super rugby recall.

Ralph has been called into the Queensland Reds squad for the Saturday's match against the Chiefs as injury cover and if he takes the field will equal George Gregan's record of 136 Super Rugby games.

Ralph's last Super rugby appearance was for the Crusaders in 2008 but he began his career with the Chiefs in 1997.

He's spent the past two years playing club rugby in Queensland and the 33-year-old says he'd given up on a return to Super rugby.

Caleb Ralph's 58 Super rugby tries puts him second on the all time try scoring list, with only former All Black Doug Howlett on 59 ahead of him.

The Reds are already guaranteed a home semi final.
