Dual rugby union and rugby league international and former league commentator Rex Mossop has died, aged 83.

The former Manly-Warringah star forward was known to suffer from Alzheimer's disease and was admitted to hospital earlier this year. His condition is understood to have deteriorated in the past week.

Mossop played rugby union for the Manly club and played eight Tests for the Wallabies from 1948 to 1951.

He then joined the Manly Sea Eagles, becoming the cornerstone of their forward pack in the late 1950s.

After retiring in 1963 at the age of 35 Mossop became rugby league's premier television commentator on Channels 7 and 10 from the 1970s through to 1990.
