Football Ferns peaking at right time

9:47 am on 19 June 2011

The New Zealand women's football team have had their first consecutive wins over non-Oceania opposition in 30 years after beating Colombia 1-nil at the Matchworld Cup in Switzerland this morning.

It's a timely scalp a week out from the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany.

Betsy Hassett capped a sweeping counterattack and scored in the 70th minute.

After a 2-nil win over Wales on Thursday, New Zealand top the standings of the four nation tournament, two points ahead of Denmark who beat Wales in the day's other match.

The two teams square off on Tuesday morning.

New Zealand coach John Herdman says the back-to-back wins have added real impetus to the Football Ferns build-up nine days out from their opening Women's World Cup game against Japan.
