Van Gisbergen claims second V8's win

In a master versus apprentice battle, New Zealand's Shane van Gisbergen held out veteran Craig Lowndes to chalk up his second career win after a masterful display of driving helped the 22-year-old claim victory in the Darwin round's second and final V8 Supercars race on Sunday.

Series leader Jamie Whincup looked home before he was swamped at a re-start after a second safety car with just 10 laps left.

Whincup was left for dead by five cars armed with the faster soft compound tyres at the re-start, with van Gisbergen leading the way.

The young Ford driver held his nerve as Lowndes made his presence known to snare his second career win.

The victory moves Van Gisbergen back into third in the Driver's Championship just 261 points from leader Jamie Whincup and 105 from second placed Craig Lowndes.

It also cements Stone Brothers Racing in second place in the Team's Championship behind Triple 8.

The next round will be held in Townsville from July the 8th.
