The British golfer Rory McIlroy has won his first major with a runaway victory at the U.S. Open at Congressional, banishing memories of his final-round Masters meltdown two months ago.
The 22-year-old, who led the field at the year's second major after every round and held an eight-shot lead after 54 holes, carded a two-under-par 69 in the final round to finish on 16 under and win by eight strokes over Australia's Jason Day.
The Northern Irishman finally lived up to his reputation as heir-apparent to Tiger Woods, and after the nailing the final putt McIlroy dedicated the victory to his long-supporting family.
McIlroy becomes the second man from Great Britain to win the US Open in two year's after Greame McDowall's triumph in 2010.
