Waldrom named in England squad

The former Hurricanes, Crusaders and New Zealand age grade representative Thomas Waldrom has been included in England's 45-man rugby World Cup training squad alongside prop Matt Stevens, who returned to action in January after a two-year doping ban.

Samoan-born Manu Tuilagi and loose forward Waldrom join fellow uncapped players Mouritz Botha, Joe Simpson and Charlie Sharples in the squad, which will be trimmed to 30 in August before the New Zealand World Cup in September and October.

Stevens was an England regular, playing in the 2007 World Cup final, before he was banned after testing positive for cocaine.

The 28-year-old has been in superb form since returning to action, helping his club Saracens to the Premiership title and consistently impressive for England's second-string Saxons team in the Churchill Cup.

Tuilagi who missed the Premiership final after being banned for punching new England team mate Chris Ashton, New Zealander Waldrom and South Africa-born Botha, who is now available after completing his qualification period, add more overseas influence to the squad.

All the players from the Six Nations-winning squad were included, along with halfback Richard Wigglesworth, hooker Lee Mears, wing Ugo Monye, and Gloucester back James Simpson-Daniel, who has spent his career being picked then dropped from the England squad.

England play three warm-up matches in August, two against Wales and one against Ireland, before beginning their World Cup campaign against Argentina on September the 10th.
