The International Cricket Council says Whangarei's Cobham Oval is up to standard for international matches.

The approval followed an inspection this month by ICC Match Referee Alan Hurst who's swritten to New Zealand Cricket to say he's "impressed with the facilities"

Northland Cricket Chief Executive Gary Bell says it's a big breakthrough for the association, which has put in a lot of hard work.

Bell says that's included creating a separate players' pavilion with more space and comfort, increasing the grass net area and using the soil to reshape the embankment to boost spectator capacity to 5500.
