Manawatu have moved closer to a playoff spot in the National Basketball League after a 99-78 win over Nelson in Palmerston North

The loss has put the Giants' home quarter-final hopes in jeopardy with the Jets holding a tiebreak advantage over them.

The Auckland Pirates have kept alive their slim hopes of a post-season place and ended Otago's, the Nuggets becoming the first team to be eliminated from playoff contention after the 88-80 home loss in Dunedin.

The Wellington Saints and Hawke's Bay sealed their playoff berths on Friday, the Saints clinching a top two spot with a 114-102 home win over the Jets while the Hawks earned a home quarter-final by edging the Giants 86-83 at Taradale.

The Southland Sharks put themselves in a good position for a playoff spot with a 90-77 thumping of the Pirates in Invercargill, the home side ending a two-game losing streak.

The Sharks now need only one more win to clinch a finals place, but their remaining games are on the road against the Giants, the Jets and the Hawks.
