The young All Whites' chances of making the quarter-finals were over by half time when they trailed 4-0 after conceding two quick goals midway through the spell.
Speed, passing skills and ability to create and take chances have made the Japanese one of the tournament favourites annd they'll play Brazil for a place in the semi-finals.
