Football Ferns fail to advance at World Cup

The New Zealand women's football team's dreams of reaching the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cup have been shattered after the Football Ferns were beaten 2-1 by England in their second pool game in Germany.

The Football Ferns were just minutes away from claiming a draw and just their second ever point in World Cup history but couldn't hold out the fast finishing English in Dresden.

The New Zealanders had led 1-0 on the back of a 18th minute goal from striker Sarah Gregorious but they conceded under English pressure in the 63rd minute and 81st minutes and now have no chance of advancing from the group stage.

Coach John Herdman was disappointed to have come so close to making history but says he's proud of the Ferns' performance.

The Ferns now face Mexico in their final pool game on Wednesday before heading home.
