Caribbean government leaders have agreed to a request from Chris Gayle to intervene in his dispute with the West Indies Cricket Board which is keeping him from playing for the region.
New Caricom chairman Denzil Douglas says it will resurrect its prime ministers subcommittee on cricket to try to resolve the impasse, which has left Gayle out of the team since he captained the West Indies to the World Cup quarter-finals in March.
Gayle made an impassioned plea in a statement last week for Caricom to step in, calling WICB attempts at reconciliation "a sham and a mockery."
The players' union welcomed Caricom's decision, and said in a statement it viewed the move "with considerable optimism."
Gayle and the WICB have been at loggerheads since he and senior players were criticised by coach Ottis Gibson in the World Cup aftermath.
