Silver Ferns fast starts down to change in warm ups

8:12 am on 8 July 2011

The Silver Ferns improved first quarter efforts at the world netball champs are down to a change in warm up procedures says coach Ruth Aitken.

In recent years the Silver Ferns have traditionally been slow starters which has often hurt them when playing the likes of Australia, struggling to get back into matches having conceded large first quarter deficits.

However Aitken says captain Casey Williams has tinkered with their warm-ups and increased the intensity doing a lot more contested drills in the period immediately before a match.

After straightfoward wins over Fiji, Wales and Trinidad and Tobago the Silver Ferns play South Africa in the quarter finals tonight.

Aitken says she's pleased with the team's form having played just about every combination that possibly could ahead of the knock out phase of the tournament.

The Silver Ferns are scheduled to play England in semi finals while Australia are likely to play Jamaica.
