The top Australian swimmer Nick D'Arcy has been ordered to pay compensation of more than $225,000 after assaulting a fellow swimmer in March 2008.

A judge has rejected D'Arcy's claim of self defence, relating to the assault on the Commonwealth Games swimming champion Simon Cowley who suffered a broken jaw, broken nose and broken eye socket.

The incident happened just after D'Arcy had been named in Australia's Olympic team for Beijing and he was thrown out of the team.

A spokesman for Swimming Australia says there's no barrier to D'Arcy trying for selection for next year's London Olympics.

Only last month D'Arcy beat the US sensation Michael Phelps.
