The New Zealand distance swimmer Cara Baker staged an unbelievable recovery to complete the 10 kilometre open water race at the world championshps in Shanghai after a serious health scare leading up to the race.
Her coach Philip Rush said he was petrified when Baker turned grey and fainted into his arms less than two hours before the race.
She had two more fainting spells before Rush decided, with the help of doctors' advice, she was well enough to start the race, and she finished 22nd, only 36 seconds behind the winner, and 15 seconds outside of a top-10 spot that would have guaranteed qualification for the London Olympics.
The five-kilometre event is on Friday.
